FFCC meet Federal Treasurer Peter Costello MP

Following the successful Footprints in the Park event held in May, members of the group took the colourful canvas to Peter Costello at his office on 15th June 2007. On a chilly morning, six mothers and 12 children met with our Federal Treasurer and member for the local seat of Higgins, and presented him the symbolic canvas. Four of us stayed to have a chat with him about our groups concerns regarding climate change. We asked him questions regarding the federal governments current initiative and intensions.

Mr. Costello seemed to listen to our concerns and assured us the government is serious about tackling climate change. We congratulated him on the solar power station project he helped support in Mildura, and told him we wanted more projects and funding such as this going to increasing our renewable energy capabilities. We were concerned with some of his responses, such as the governments refusal to set greenhouse gas reduction targets, and the plan to give free credits to large energy intensive industries in the proposed carbon trading system. However, we hope that by meeting in person with him, along with the footprints of over 100 kids representing Australia’s future, Peter heard our basic message that we want the federal government to act decisively on climate change. We encourage any individual or group to meet with their local representative to send a message on your concern regarding climate change.
