Campaigns
We are supporting Environment Victoria's 2 key campaigns for 2010:
1. Replace Hazelwood power station by 2012 with a combination of renewable energy, energy efficiency and gas (as a transition fuel).
An election year gives us the best fighting chance to bring Hazelwood power station to a halt. To campaign the replacement of Hazelwood, Families For a Safe Climate built a dinosaur "Hazel" and took her to the streets of Ashburton, to inform the public on how together we can replace Hazelwood and reduce Victoria’s greenhouse pollution by at least 12% by 2012.
On Saturday the 17th July (the National Day Of Action), within a few hours we secured over 200 signatures of people in support of replacing Hazelwood with renewable energy.
Hazelwood power station is the dirtiest power station in the developed world, and it’s right here in Victoria. We’ll be telling the Federal and Victorian Governments that when it comes to Hazelwood power station, it’s closing time.
According to studies, endorsed by Environment Victoria, it is possible to replace Hazelwood by the end of 2012. The Latrobe Valley could flourish, besides obvious greener pastures, jobs created by the construction and operation of the new power generators would far exceed Hazel’s current employee numbers.
Read the report "Fast-tracking Victoria’s clean energy future to replace Hazelwood Power Station - May 2010" which details how Hazelwood can be replaced as soon as the end of 2012. All while maintaining energy security, cutting Victoria's greenhouse pollution by 12 percent and creating more jobs than Hazelwood currently provides.
The report was written by energy analysts Green Energy Markets for Environment Victoria.
2. Retrofit one million Victorian homes for energy and water efficiency over the next five years.
A big plan like this will make deep cuts to our greenhouse pollution, save 32.5 billion litres of water a year, and create up to 6,900 new jobs. It will make our housing stock a part of the solution to climate change, and help households adapt to harsher and dryer conditions.
